Aim: The present study aimed to investigate the combined effect of citrulline, caffeine, and creatine supplementation on muscular strength and power in female athletes.
Method: In this quasi-experimental study with a randomized, crossover, double-blind, placebo-controlled design, 15 female track and field athletes working in throwing disciplines (age: 24.40±3.29, weight: 71.46±4.76, height: 172.66±4.70, BMI: 24.02±1.13) were selected to participate in the present study. The present study was conducted in seven baseline conditions, acute citrulline intake (8 g), acute creatine intake (20 g), acute caffeine intake (6 mg per kg body weight), combined citrulline and caffeine intake, combined citrulline and creatine intake, and placebo (maltodextrin). The interval between each condition was one week, and in each of the supplement and placebo conditions, 60 minutes were taken before performing the activities (RAST test, squats, and chest press). The data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance.
Results: The results showed that the use of caffeine, citrulline, creatine alone and the combination of supplements (citrulline + caffeine and citrulline + creatine) significantly increased anaerobic power (peak power, average power, minimum power) and upper limb muscle strength (chest press) and lower limb muscle strength (squat) in female track and field athletes working in throwing disciplines (p
