Abstract
Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of two weeks of L-carnitine supplementation on serum levels of total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) following intense aerobic exercise in female karate athletes.
Method: This experimental study followed a repeated-measures design with a control group, conducted as a randomized, single-blind trial with placebo and supplement groups. Twenty-one female karate athletes from Mashhad were selected based on inclusion criteria and randomly assigned to either the supplement or placebo group. After participant selection, maximal oxygen consumption (VO₂max) was measured, and blood samples were taken to assess TAC and MDA levels. The supplement group received 2 grams of L-carnitine daily for 14 days, while the placebo group took 2 grams of starch in capsule form. On the 15th day, before the endurance running test, fasting blood samples were collected. Additional blood samples were taken at 5 minutes, 2 hours, and 24 hours post-exercise. Data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for normality and repeated-measures ANOVA via SPSS (version 24), with a significance level of 0.05.
